THIS WEEK ON REDBUD RADIO:
Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airman recorded their version of “Hot Rod Lincoln” in 1972 but the Charlie Ryan-penned original was actually an answer song written in response to Arkie Shibley and his Mountain Dew Boys 1951 hit “Hot Rod Race.”
And another downright iconic gear-headed glorification in the form of a hymn of praise to the Oldsmobile Rocket 88 will be coming up fast on the heels of that model A, I’d say. We all know that Jackie Brenton & His Delta Cats were really Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm, right? Sam Phillips was convinced that was the first rock and roll song (it was recorded at his Sun Studios in Memphis), though opinions differ.
From car culture to tall trees. Cahalen Morrison & Eli West, The Louvin Brothers, and Mark Knopfler‘s “Redbud Tree” from his “Privateering” project will help us create some biomass to offset all that CO2 them cars cranked out.
Sam Cooke, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and The Band all reside comfortably within a set that’ll make perfect sense when you hear it. Same goes for a certain song from Rosie Flores‘ new “Working Girl’s Guitar” being followed by a certain Byrds number. Explanations just ruin the surprise.
A sobriety set, seven songs strong, will take it out for us. You might not think cautionary tales about the trouble that follows in the wake of alcohol consumption would exactly spell fun, but you’d be wrong. Think Loretta Lynn and her admonition to not come home a-drinkin’ with lovin’ on your mind, or Junior Brown telling us why he hung it up, that kinda thing. Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson, Annie Lou, New American Farmers, The Seldom Scene, and a crowd-pleasing tome of some renown from Keller Williams & The Traveling McCourys.
Redbud Radio airs at Midnight (Eastern) Saturday night/Sunday morning on WICR 88.7 FM in Indianapolis and Sunday evening at 6PM (Central) on Dewberry Jam Community Radio in San Antonio, Texas.
Not in Indy? Not a problem!
The show will be posted here on the site later this week and remains on our player for 7 days.
